Archdeacon of Armagh
The Archbishop of Armagh, has appointed the Rev’d Canon Peter Thompson to be the Archdeacon of Armagh, following the retirement of the Venerable Terry Scott. The appointment will take immediate effect.
Commenting on the appointment the Archbishop said “I am delighted that Canon Thompson has accepted my invitation to become Archdeacon of Armagh and to work alongside Archdeacon Elizabeth Cairns as my executive officers in the Diocese.
Canon Thompson has been a very busy and effective Rural Dean and his involvement in the musical life of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh has enriched the life of the cathedral and the Diocese.
My prayers will be with Peter and his family as he takes up this senior role.”
Canon Thompson said “I am both humbled and honoured at the opportunity to serve the diocese and Church in this new way. I am grateful to the Archbishop for his confidence and trust, and conscious of the diligent pastoral care and leadership provided by former Archdeacons. The challenges and opportunities of mission and ministry in a post-pandemic society are greater than ever before, and I look forward to being involved in the leadership of the diocese as we rebuild our parish life and refocus our vision for the future.”
New Diocesan Chancellor for Armagh
The Archbishop is pleased to announce that he has appointed the Reverend Terence Dunlop, a Church of Ireland priest and practising lawyer in the Lady Chief Justice’s Office, as Diocesan Chancellor.
The Archbishop said, ‘I was delighted when the Reverend Terence Dunlop accepted my offer to become Chancellor of the Diocese of Armagh, in succession to Sir Paul Girvan PC. I have known the new Chancellor since we studied together for Orders nearly thirty years ago, and look forward to working with him as my principal Diocesan Legal Adviser, particularly in matters relating to the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Ireland’.
The Reverend Terence Dunlop commented, 'I am very honoured to have been invited by the Archbishop to take on this role and I look forward to being of whatever use I can to assist him in ensuring the maintenance of proper ecclesiastical order and good governance within the diocese in furtherance of the church's mission and calling.'
The Reverend Terence Dunlop was ordained priest in 1998. He is currently a lawyer in the Lady Chief Justice's Office and Secretary to the Judicial Studies Board for Northern Ireland. The new Diocesan Chancellor has a Master of Laws degree (LLM 2003) in Canon Law from Cardiff University and is a member of the Ecclesiastical law Society.
